Warning

This guide is for Paprika 4, which is currently in beta. Switch to the Paprika 3 guide.

The Paprika Recipe Manager skill for Amazon Alexa brings your recipes, grocery lists, pantry and meal plan to your Echo devices. On any Echo you can manage your grocery lists and pantry and check your meal plan by voice. On an Echo Show or another Alexa device with a screen, you can also browse your recipes and cook from them hands-free.

Note

While Paprika 4 is in beta, the skill is available to Paprika 4 beta testers only. Fill out the Alexa beta signup form with the email address of your Amazon account, then accept the invitation it gives you.

Link Alexa

  1. Click the Accept Invite button from your Alexa beta test invitation. (You will need to do this from a phone or tablet with the Alexa app installed, and be logged into Alexa with the email address you provided when you signed up for the Alexa beta test.)
  2. This will open your web browser and load the invitation. Click on Open Alexa.
  3. Once the Alexa app opens, click on I Accept.
  4. The Paprika Recipe Manager skill will be displayed. Click on Enable To Use.
  5. Paprika 4 will open and ask you to give our Alexa skill permission to access your Paprika account. Click Authorize.
  6. Once Paprika is linked to Alexa, follow the steps below to use the Paprika skill.

See How do I link Paprika with Alexa? for step-by-step screenshots.

On iOS and Android, you can also link your account from Paprika: open the Settings panel and choose Alexa from the Connections group. The screen shows whether your account is currently linked; press Link and follow the sign-in steps to connect, or Unlink to disconnect.

Open the Skill

To open the skill, say one of these:

Say
"Alexa, open Paprika Recipe Manager"
"Alexa, start Paprika Recipe Manager"
"Alexa, launch Paprika Recipe Manager"

You can also open the skill and make a request at the same time:

Say To
"Alexa, ask Paprika Recipe Manager what's for dinner" Hear what's planned for dinner today.
"Alexa, tell Paprika Recipe Manager to add milk to my grocery list" Add an item to your grocery list.
"Alexa, ask Paprika Recipe Manager to show my recipes" Browse your recipes.

Once the skill is open, you can leave out its name.

On a device with a screen, opening the skill shows a button for each section: Recipes, Groceries, Pantry, Meals, Search and Pins, each with what to say to open it. The same sections are in the menu on the left of the recipes, grocery list, pantry and meal plan screens.

After Alexa answers, the skill stays open but Alexa stops listening. Start your next request with "Alexa," as in "Alexa, show my recipes." If the skill has closed, say "Alexa, open Paprika Recipe Manager" again. While you're cooking, the screen stays on for 30 minutes.

Recipes

Recipes are shown on devices with a screen.

Say To
"Show my recipes" Browse your recipes, with your categories in the sidebar.
"Find chicken recipes" Search for recipes by name.
"Open banana bread" Open a recipe by its name.
"Show recipe number three" Open a recipe from the list on screen.
"Show my pinned recipes" See your pinned recipes.

Tap a category to show its recipes, and tap the cookbook name above the categories to switch cookbooks. Searching looks at recipe names in all of your cookbooks, as do pinned recipes. On the search screen you can also type a search with the on-screen keyboard.

Cooking

Open a recipe, then:

Say To
"Start cooking" Step through the directions, starting with the first.
"Next step" / "Previous step" Move between steps.
"Go to step 3" Jump to a step.
"Read this step" / "Repeat that" Hear the current step again.
"What are the ingredients?" Hear the ingredients.
"How much flour do I need?" Hear the amount of one ingredient.
"Cross off the flour" Cross off an ingredient you've added. "Uncross the flour" undoes it.
"Double the recipe" / "Halve the recipe" Scale the ingredients. "Reset the scale" undoes it.
"Add the ingredients to my grocery list" Add the recipe's ingredients to a grocery list.

On a screen, you can also tap Start cooking, tap an ingredient to cross it off, and tap the arrows on the step pill to move between steps. A recipe's scale is saved to the recipe, so it's the same on your other devices.

Grocery Lists

Say To
"Add milk and eggs to my grocery list" Add items to your default grocery list.
"Add cookies to my Target list" Add items to another grocery list, by its name.
"We're out of butter" Add an item to your grocery list.
"What's on my grocery list?" Hear or see what's left to buy.
"Check off the milk" Mark an item as purchased.
"Remove the eggs from my shopping list" Delete an item from the list.

On a screen, the grocery list shows the items you still need to buy, grouped by aisle, with their quantities below them. Tap an item's checkbox to check it off, and tap a list in the sidebar to switch lists. As in the apps, the same ingredient from several recipes is combined into one item.

Changes you make with Alexa sync to Paprika on your other devices.

Pantry

Say To
"Add flour to my pantry" Add an item to your pantry.
"What's in my pantry?" Hear or see your pantry items.
"Do I have eggs?" Check whether an item is in your pantry and in stock.

On a screen, the pantry is grouped by aisle, with your pantry locations in the sidebar.

Meal Plan

Say To
"What's for dinner?" Hear today's meals of that type.
"What's on the menu tomorrow?" Hear the meals planned for a day.
"Show my meal plan" See today's meals on a screen.

On a screen, the meal plan shows one day at a time. Move to the previous or next day with the arrows, and tap a meal to open its recipe.
